Justin Martyr, Dialogue with Trypho 111

Justin Martyr · c. 100–c. 165 AD

I have already shown that the two comings of this Christ were foretold symbolically by Moses through the figure of the two goats offered in the fast.

Again, the same mystery was proclaimed symbolically in what Moses and Jesus did: Moses stretched out his hands on the hill until evening, his hands being held up, which displays the type of nothing other than the cross; and Jesus, who had been renamed Jesus, led the battle and conquered Israel.

Both of those holy men and prophets of God perceived this as well: neither one of them could bear both mysteries — I mean the type of the cross and the type of the invocation of the name — for the power belongs to one alone, and was, and is, and will be, whose name every ruler fears, writhing in anguish because they are destined to be destroyed through him.

Therefore our Christ, who suffered and was crucified, was not cursed by the law, but he alone demonstrated that he will save those who do not turn away from his faith.

Likewise those who were saved in Egypt when the firstborn of the Egyptians perished were protected by the blood of the Passover, smeared on the doorposts and the lintel; for the Passover was Christ, who was slain later, as Isaiah also said: "He was led like a sheep to slaughter" (Isaiah 53:7).

And that you seized him on the day of the Passover and likewise crucified him on the Passover is written.

Just as the blood of the Passover saved those in Egypt, so also the blood of Christ will rescue from death those who believe.

Would God have been deceived if this sign had not been placed on the doors? I do not say so; rather, he proclaimed beforehand the salvation that was going to come to the human race through the blood of Christ.

And the symbol of the scarlet cord, which the spies sent by Jesus son of Nun gave to Rahab the prostitute in Jericho, telling her to fasten it to the window through which she let them down so that they might escape their enemies, similarly signified the blood of Christ, through which former prostitutes and the unrighteous from all nations are saved, having received forgiveness of sins and no longer sinning.
