Commodian, Instructions XXXIX. Also to the Jews.

Commodian · fl. c. 250 AD

Look at Leah: she was a type of the Synagogue, with eyes as weak as Jacob found her by sign; yet she served again for the less-loved wife (Genesis 29:17-18). It is a true mystery and type of our Church. Listen fully to the word spoken to Rebecca from heaven: from that source you imitate strangers, so that you may believe in Christ. Then consider Tamar's twin birth: look at Cain, the first tiller of the soil, and at Abel the shepherd, who was blameless, slain and offered up in his brother's murder by his own brother (Genesis 4:1-16). So then, you younger ones approved by Christ, understand this.

Latin

Inspice Liam, typum Synagogae fuisse; Tam infirmis oculis, quam Jacob in signo recepit: Et tamen servivit rursum pro minore dilecta. Mysterium verum et typum Ecclesiae nostrae. Intuite plene dictum Rebeccae de coelo: Unde similantes alienae, Christo credatis. Deinde Thamar partum geminorum adite: Ad Cain intendite, primum terrae cultorem, Et Abel pastorem, qui fuit immaculatus In fratris exitio offertor mactatus a fratre. Sic ergo percipite, juniores Christo probatos.
