GAR. 2. Adam, if he had persevered in integrity, was to be given continuance and increase of bodily and spiritual goods. Therefore, falling from that integrity, it was fitting he should lie under bodily and spiritual evils: why then should God not have meant those by the name of death?

PLAC. But perseverance in integrity and continuance of integrity are the same thing. And how do original integrity and original righteousness differ? So he was to be given continuance—not of original righteousness (for that continuance was required as the condition), but of all other goods. Integrity is opposed immediately to corruption: to fall from integrity is to be corrupted; to lose integrity is to gain corruption. So the learned man confounds the condition of the promise with the thing promised; and his antecedent is true only of physical goods, or goods other than integrity or righteousness itself.

Latin

GAR. 2. Adamus in integritate perseverans, bonorum & corporalium, & spiritualium continuatione & augmento donandus erat: Ergo & ab ea integritate deficiens, ut malis subiaceret, & corporalibus, & spiritualibus, consentaneum erat: quidni ergo Deus ea significata voluerit mortis nomine? PLAC.
