Chapter One. The decree of the Synod.

The decree of the Synod runs as follows, Antoine Garissoles — minister of the Word of God and professor of sacred theology in the church and academy of Montauban — turning it from French into Latin speech.

When it had been reported to the Synod that certain writings had come forth, some published in type, others drawn out by hand, which define the whole account of original sin by hereditary corruption alone inhering in all human beings, and deny the imputation of Adam's first sin: the Synod condemned doctrine of that sort, insofar as it so restricts the nature of original sin to the hereditary corruption of Adam's posterity that it excludes the imputation of that first sin by which Adam fell (Genesis 3:6). And therefore it judged that pastors, professors, and any others who, in the discussion of this question, have withdrawn from the common judgment of the Protestant churches — churches which have all hitherto acknowledged both that corruption and this imputation descending upon all Adam's posterity (Romans 5:12) — should be subjected to all censures. But the same Synod also enjoins upon all colloquies and provincial synods that those whom they cause to be advanced as candidates of theology to the sacred ministry are to be ordered to subscribe their own hand to this Decree.

This Decree has also been variously received by the provincial synods themselves. To some it seemed good that it be put into execution. To others it seemed right to hold their judgment in suspense, and to suspend the execution of that Decree until another National Synod. There were among pastors and private persons those who kissed it as necessary, as most equitable, as most true. There were not wanting, on the other side, those who dared to reject it as new, as not necessary, as made too hastily, the matter scarcely weighed enough, and without consulting the provincial synods — indeed, as less agreeable to the Word of God.

Latin

CAPUT PRIMUM. DECRETUM SYNODI. Decretum Synodi sic se habet, vertente e Gallico in Latinum Sermonem D. Garissolio, in Ecclesia & Academia Montalbanensi Verbi Dei Ministro & SS. Theologiae Professore.
