Fragments on the Psalms (Greek) · §96

Psalm 22:3 — he turned back my soul; paths of righteousness as habit and as the virtues

“He turned back my soul; he guided me upon paths of righteousness, for the sake of his name” (Psalm 22:3).

For he mounted as the shepherd, and wore paths beforehand, so that his own sheep might follow in the tracks. Righteousness then is the practical habit of the just, whose paths are according to the activity. And if someone should call righteousness the generic virtue, he will say that its paths are the virtues according to species, upon which he guides the one who inscribes his appellation.

“He turned back my soul,” he says, that had wandered from its own or had fallen down; or the Lord turns back the soul that has fallen out, and restores it after the shepherding, and it is encamped into a place of green grass; then having turned it back he guides upon paths of righteousness and virtue.
