1An Oration on the Resurrection of the Lord. A day of joy and gladness, my beloved; a day of exultation and salvation, a day of enlightenment and sanctification, a day of peace and reconciliation; a day of the remodeling and renewal of our souls, a day truly great and wonderful and manifest. In this day, Christ raised us, having been cast down by sin; in this day, Christ made us alive together with him, having been dead through our trespasses; in this day, he opened paradise, that we might enjoy the tree of life; which is his precious and life-giving body and blood, through which we are ransomed and sanctified and enlightened and renewed. For Christ gave himself as a ransom for all of us, and led us out of death into life, from darkness into light, from slavery into liberty, and from enmity into a genuine friendship. Having become a curse for us, he ransomed us from the curse and from sin, so that we might receive adoption, so that we might no longer be slaves but free, no longer subject to passions but impassible, no longer lovers of the world but lovers of God, no longer walking according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

He sanctified and glorified us in the Holy Spirit, so that we might walk in a newness of life; but what shall we return to the Lord for all these things which he has returned to us? What shall we return that is equal to his surpassing gift and grace? Let us thank and fall down before the Lord and worship him, and let us bring incense and hymns as gifts with fear and reverence; for the Master is both man-loving and good-loving, and he accepts all things, even if they are small and lowly things brought to him by us. Let us also, my brothers, love him who loved us by grace, let us die on behalf of him who died for us by gift, let us walk after his holy commandments; let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of flesh and spirit, let us present to our God good works, faith, love, hope, and endurance, the breaking of hearts, the gift of compunction, the cleansing of conscience, the putting to death of earthly cares, fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed; let us serve the Lord with understanding, stability, fortitude, and patience; let us be filled to the brim with the cup of the true God and our Savior; let us sing to him a new song, let us all sing, let us clap our hands and shout to God with a voice of exultation, for the Lord is the Most High, a fearsome King over all the earth. A great Lord, and without limit is his majesty; a great Lord, and great is his power; he has abolished and trampled down our arrogant and proud enemy, the devil, and he has trampled down death, having gifted us all with eternal life. Let us all, beloved, enjoy the good gifts of this beautiful festival; let us enter rejoicing into...

The Triumph of the Resurrection§2

2The joy of our Lord... rulers and those being ruled... elders with youths, men and women, rich and poor, slaves and free, glorify and magnify our Lord God, and hymn, marvel at, and honor this bright and splendid day, having fasted and labored... you have celebrated today. Rich and poor, dance together; honor the day through self-control and relaxation; whether fasting or not fasting, rejoice today; the table is full; let no one go out hungry and deprived; all enjoy the wealth of goodness, because Christ our Passover was set for us (1 Cor 5:7). All draw from the stainless spring of the Savior God and rejoice; taste and see that Christ is Lord; God is Lord and has appeared to us; let no one mourn poverty, for the common kingdom has appeared; let no one lament falls, for forgiveness has risen from the tomb; let no one fear death, for the death of the Savior has set us free. For Christ our God saved us and rescued us from Hades; he snatched us from the power of the devil and his slavery and set us free. Hades was overcome after tasting the precious and holy flesh of the Master, just as Isaiah foretold: 'Hades was overcome meeting you below' (Isa 8:14/Ps 118:22); it was overcome; for it was also annulled; it was overcome; for it was also mocked; it was overcome; for it was also bound; he took a body and encountered God; he took what he saw and fell from where he did not see; death swallowed, not knowing, and swallowing, it knew whom it swallowed; it swallowed life, but was swallowed by life; it swallowed the One among all, and the One destroyed all through the many. He snatched him like a lion, but crushed the teeth. Through sin death was strong; but in Christ, not finding sin, it remained inactive. It is therefore a good time to say: O death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory? (1 Cor 15:55). Christ has risen and you have been cast down; Christ has risen and angels rejoice; Christ has risen and demons fall. Christ has risen and we have been redeemed from corruption; Christ has risen and we have been rescued from the curse; Christ has risen and we have risen with him; Christ has risen and we have been made alive; Christ, having risen from the dead, became the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep; to him be the glory and the power and the worship and the greatness now and forever and unto the ages of ages. Amen. Oratio in resurrectionem domini: Bright and great and wonderful is the present day, and truly of joy and...

3A day of joy, and of lifting up, and of spiritual incense and of rejoicing; a day of liberty and of illumination and of sanctification; a day of reconciliation and of peace and of salvation and of help for our souls. In this day Christ raised us, having been cast down by sin; in this day He gave life together to those dead through trespasses; in this day He opened to us the paradise which the disobedience and transgression of our forefathers had closed; in this day He deemed us worthy to enjoy His precious and life-giving both body and blood, through which we are being purified and enlightened and sanctified; for Christ gave Himself as a ransom for us, and led us from death into life, from darkness into light, from slavery into liberty, from enmity into a genuine friendship; 'He has redeemed us from the curse' (Galatians 4:4-5) and 'from sin,' 'becoming a curse on our behalf' (Galatians 4:5) so that we might receive adoption, so that we might no longer be slaves but free, no longer subject to passions but impassive, no longer lovers of the world but lovers of God, no longer 'walking according to the flesh' but 'according to the Spirit' (Romans 8:4-5); He sanctified and glorified us in the Holy Spirit 'so that we might walk in newness of life' (Romans 6:4).

'What shall we return to the Lord for all that He has returned to us' (Psalm 116:12), what shall we return for the gift and grace of God which surpasses all? Let us give thanks and worship and offer to Him our prayers and hymns as gifts with fear and reverence and humility; for the Master is a lover of mankind and compassionate, and He accepts all things, even if they are small and lowly things being brought to Him by us. Let us love, my brothers, the Lord who loved us by grace; let us die for the sake of Him who died for us by gift; let us walk after His holy commandments; 'let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of flesh and spirit' (2 Corinthians 7:1); let us present to our God good deeds, faith, love, hope, contrition of heart, tears of compunction, the cleansing of conscience, and the putting to death of all sin and evil desire; let us serve the Lord with understanding and patience and perseverance; let us drink deeply of the cup of the true God and our Savior; let us sing to Him a new song, let us all sing, let us clap our hands psalmody, and let us shout to God with a voice of rejoicing, for 'the Lord Most High is a terrible King over all the earth' (Psalm 47:2). 4His power; for he abolished and trampled the enemy and the devil, and he trampled death, and he raised all, having gifted eternal life. Let us enter rejoicing into the joy of our Lord, as good servants, let us all enjoy the good gifts of this beautiful festival, ruling and being ruled, servants and free, men and women, elders and youths.

Glorify the Lord our God, and hymn, magnify, and marvel at this bright day; whether fasting or not fasting, be glad today, whether exercising self-control or being loose, honor the day, dancing together whether rich or poor. The table is full, feast all; the table is full, let no one go out hungry and lacking; all enjoy the wealth of goodness, for 'our Passover Christ was offered for us' (1 Cor 5:7), all draw from the pure spring of the Savior God and be glad; 'taste and see that the Lord is good' (Ps 34:8), God Jesus Christ who also shone upon us. Let no one mourn the falls, for he rose by forgiveness from the tomb; let no one fear death, for the death of the Savior set us free; he saved us and rescued us from Hades; he snatched us from the power of the devil and his slavery.

Hades was overcome after tasting the precious and holy flesh of the Master, just as Isaiah foretold, 'Hades' saying, 'overcome meeting you below' (Isa 28:18). Hades was overcome because it was abolished; Hades was overcome because it was mocked; Hades was overcome; for indeed it was bound; it took a body and encountered God, it took what it saw and fell from where it did not see. Death swallowed in ignorance, but swallowing, it knew whom it swallowed; it swallowed life, but was swallowed by life; it swallowed the One among all, but through the One destroyed all; 'he snatched like a lion' (Hos 13:14), but he crushed the teeth. Through sin death was strong, but in Christ, not finding sin, it remained inactive.

'O death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?' (1 Cor 15:55) Christ has risen and you have been cast down; Christ has risen and angels rejoice and demons have fallen; Christ has risen and from corruption we have been redeemed and from the curse we have been rescued; Christ has risen and we have risen with him and have been made worthy of life. 'Christ having risen from the dead became the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep' (1 Cor 15:20); to him be the glory through the ages of the ages. Amen.
