Lasting fire in the stables against the toad's puff

Of Africanus: so that livestock not be harmed by a toad lurking at night or in a dark place, puffing upon them. The toad is accustomed to puff upon livestock most harshly if it lurk unnoticed in a stable at night or in a gloomy place; and from this pestilential diseases follow the animals, and swellings hard to heal, so that all aid toward the danger is idle. Therefore, so that it never do such a thing, one must kindle a lasting fire in the stables; for this creature fears fire as its own check.
