Theophilus of Antioch, To Autolycus 11

Theophilus of Antioch · fl. c. 180 AD

The beginning of creation is light, because the things being made are revealed by the light (Genesis 1:1-31). Therefore God says, 'Let there be light,' and it is clear that the light is good for humans (Genesis 1:1-31). God separates the light from the darkness, calls the light day and the darkness night, and there is evening and morning, the first day (Genesis 1:1-31). God says, 'Let there be a firmament in the middle of the water to separate water from water,' and it happens; God makes the firmament, separates the water under it from the water above it, calls the firmament heaven, and sees that it is good; evening and morning mark the second day (Genesis 1:1-31). God says, 'Let the water under heaven be gathered into one place and let dry land appear,' and it happens; the water gathers, dry land appears, God calls the dry land earth and the gatherings seas, and sees that it is good; evening and morning mark the third day (Genesis 1:1-31). God says, 'Let the earth produce vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their kind and likeness, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them according to their kind,' and it happens; the earth produces vegetation and trees, and God sees that it is good; evening and morning mark the third day (Genesis 1:1-31). God says, 'Let there be lights in the firmament of heaven to give light on the earth, to separate day and night, and to serve as signs, seasons, days, and years,' and it happens; God makes the two great lights—the greater to rule the day, the lesser to rule the night—and the stars, places them in the firmament to give light on the earth, to rule day and night, and to separate light from darkness, and sees that it is good; evening and morning mark the fourth day (Genesis 1:1-31). God says, 'Let the waters produce living creatures and let birds fly above the earth across the firmament,' and it happens; God makes the great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, and every winged bird according to its kind, sees that it is good, blesses them saying, 'Be fruitful and multiply, fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth'; evening and morning mark the fifth day (Genesis 1:1-31). God says, 'Let the earth produce living creatures according to their kinds—four‑footed animals, creeping things, and beasts of the earth,' and it happens; God makes the beasts, livestock, and all creeping things, and sees that it is good (Genesis 1:1-31). God says, 'Let us make man in our image and likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven, the livestock, all the earth, and every creeping thing,' and God makes man in His image, male and female, blesses them saying, 'Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth, subdue it, and rule over the fish, birds, livestock, all the earth, and every creeping thing,' and says, 'Behold, I have given you every seed‑bearing plant and every tree with fruit for food, and to every beast, bird, and creeping thing with the breath of life, every green plant for food'; it happens, and God sees everything He made, and behold, it is very good; evening and morning mark the sixth day (Genesis 1:1-31). The heavens and the earth and all their host are completed; God finishes His work on the sixth day, rests on the seventh day from all His work, blesses the seventh day and sanctifies it because He rested from all His work that He began to make (Genesis 1:1-31).
