Lactantius — Divine Institutes 4.21

Lactantius · Divine Institutes · c. 310

When he had set in order for his disciples the preaching of the gospel and of his name, a cloud suddenly wrapped around him and lifted him into heaven on the fortieth day after the passion, as Daniel had shown it would be, saying: “And behold, coming in the clouds of heaven as a son of man, and he came unto the Ancient of Days.” The disciples, scattered through the provinces, laid the foundations of the church everywhere, themselves also doing great and almost unbelievable miracles in the name of their Master, God—because as he departed he had equipped them with power and authority, so that the account of the new announcement could be founded and confirmed.

He also opened to them all things to come: which Peter and Paul preached at Rome, and that preaching has remained written in memory. In it, among many other wonders, they also said this would happen: that after a short time God would send a king who would overthrow the Jews and level their cities to the ground, and besiege them worn out by hunger and thirst. Then they would eat the bodies of their own and consume one another; at last they would come captive into the hands of enemies and see their wives most bitterly mistreated before their eyes, virgins violated and prostituted, boys carried off, little ones dashed down, everything wasted by fire and sword, captives forever driven from their lands—because they had exulted over the most beloved and approved Son of God. And so after their death, when Nero had killed them, Vespasian extinguished the name and nation of the Jews and did all that they had foretold would come.
