Justin Martyr, First Apology 65
After washing the person who has been persuaded and has assented to the things said about the brothers, we bring him to the brothers where they are gathered. There we offer common prayers for ourselves, for the one who has been enlightened, and for all others everywhere. We pray that, having learned the true things, we may be found to be good citizens and guardians of the things entrusted to us, so that we may be saved for eternal salvation. We greet one another with a kiss after we finish the prayers.
Then bread, a cup of water, and a mixture are brought to the one presiding over the brothers. He takes them and sends up praise and glory to the Father of all through the name of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. He offers a lengthy thanksgiving for being deemed worthy of these things by him. When he has finished the prayers and the thanksgiving, all the people present shout their approval, saying: Amen. In the Hebrew language, Amen means 'so be it.' After the presider has given thanks and all the people have shouted their approval, those we call deacons give each of those present a share of the bread, wine, and water over which thanks was given, and they carry portions away to those who are absent.
