Justin Martyr, First Apology 36
When you hear the prophets' words spoken as if from a person, do not suppose that even the inspired prophets themselves are the ones speaking; rather, it is the divine Word that moves them. For at one time He speaks prophetically of things to come; at another, He utters words as if from the person of the Lord of all and Father God; at another, as if from the person of Christ; at another, as if from the person of peoples answering the Lord or His Father. You can see the same thing in your own writers: a single author writes the whole, yet introduces many speaking persons. Because the Jews who possessed the prophetic books failed to grasp this, they did not recognize the Christ when He came, and they hate us who declare that He has come and, as was foretold, prove that He was crucified by them.
