Justin Martyr, Dialogue with Trypho 96
The statement in the law that "cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree" (Deuteronomy 21:23) does not mean that God cursed this crucified man; rather, it means that God foretold what you and those like you would do because you do not recognize him as the eternal priest, king, and Christ who existed before all things and was going to appear. You yourselves will see this fulfilled, for in your synagogues you curse all who have become Christians since his time, and other nations effectively carry out that curse by killing those who confess the name of Christ alone. To all of them we say, "You are our brothers; come to know the truth of God more fully." Since neither they nor you are persuaded by us, but instead deny the name of Christ while we strive for it, we choose to die and endure rather than deny him, convinced that God will grant us every good thing he promised through Christ. In addition to all this, we pray for you that Christ may have mercy on you, because he taught us to pray for our enemies, saying, "Be kind and merciful, as your heavenly Father is kind and merciful" (Matthew 5:48). We see that the Almighty God is indeed kind and merciful: he makes his sun rise on the ungrateful and the righteous alike, and sends rain on the holy and the evil (Matthew 5:45) — all of whom he also taught will face his judgment.
