Millennium Debate

Justin Martyr, Dialogue with Trypho 81

Justin Martyr · c. 100–c. 165 AD

For Isaiah spoke thus concerning this millennium: The heaven will be new and the earth new, and they will not remember the former things nor will these come to mind; instead they will find joy and gladness in what I create. For behold, I make Jerusalem a gladness and my people a joy, and I will rejoice over Jerusalem and be glad over my people. No longer will the sound of weeping be heard in it, nor the sound of crying. No longer will a youth die before his time, nor an old man who has not filled his days; for the boy will be a hundred years old, and the sinner who dies at a hundred years will be accursed. They will build houses and inhabit them; they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit. They will not build for others to inhabit, nor plant for others to eat; for as the days of the tree of life, so will be the days of my people, and the works of their hands will wear out. My chosen ones will not labor in vain, nor bear children for a curse; for they are a righteous and blessed seed of the Lord, and their offspring with them. Before they call, I will answer; while they are still speaking, I will say, 'What is it?' Then wolves and lambs will graze together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, and dust will be the serpent's food. They will not do evil or destroy on all my holy mountain, says the Lord (Isaiah 65:17-25).

Concerning what was said in these words — 'As the days of the tree, so will be the days of my people, and the works of their labors will wear out' — we have understood that it signifies a thousand years in a mystery. For as it was said to Adam, 'On the day you eat from it you will die' (Genesis 2:17), we know that he did not complete a thousand years. We also understood the saying, 'A day of the Lord is like a thousand years' (Psalm 90:4; 2 Peter 3:8), as pointing to this. And later, among us, a man named John, one of Christ's apostles, prophesied in a revelation that those who believe in our Christ will spend a thousand years in Jerusalem. And after these things the universal and, in a word, eternal resurrection of all will take place together with judgment. Our Lord also said this: 'They neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven, being children of God, children of the resurrection' (Luke 20:35-36).
