Justin Martyr, Dialogue with Trypho 72

Justin Martyr · c. 100–c. 165 AD

I said, "I will do as you wish." They removed this explanation from the commentaries in which Ezra interpreted the law concerning the Passover: Ezra told the people, "This Passover is our Savior and our refuge. If you reflect and it enters your heart that we are going to humble him by a sign, and after these things we hope in him, this place will not be deserted for all time, says the God of hosts. But if you do not believe in him nor listen to his proclamation, you will be a laughingstock to the nations." They also cut out these words spoken through Jeremiah: "I was like an innocent lamb led to be sacrificed. They devised a plot against me, saying, 'Come, let us put wood into his bread and let us eradicate him from the land of the living, and his name will not be remembered anymore'" (Jer. 11:19). Since this pericope from the words of Jeremiah is still written in some copies of the Jewish synagogues (for they cut these things out a short time ago), it is demonstrated even from these words that the Jews plotted to kill Christ by crucifying him after planning it, and he himself is indicated as the one who was prophesied through Isaiah to be led like a sheep to slaughter, and here he is revealed as an innocent lamb; thus, being at a loss, they proceed to blaspheme. Similarly, they cut out these words from the same Jeremiah: "And the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, remembered his dead who had fallen asleep in the earth of dust, and he went down to them to proclaim the good news of his salvation to them" (cf. 1 Pet. 3:19; 4:6).

Greek

? cf. I Pierre, III, 19, et IV. 6].
