Justin Martyr, Dialogue with Trypho 137
Brothers, do not speak any evil against the crucified one, nor mock his bruises, by which it is possible for all to be healed, just as we also have been healed. It is a good thing, if you are persuaded by these words, to circumcise your hardness of heart—a hardness you do not possess because of your own opinion, since it was given as a sign, not as a work of righteousness, as the words compel. Therefore, having come to agreement, do not rail against the Son of God, nor, by obeying Pharisee teachers, ever despise the King of Israel, just as your synagogue rulers teach after the prayer. For if the one who touches things not pleasing to God is like one who touches the daughter of God, how much more so the one who touches the Beloved. That this one is he has been sufficiently demonstrated. When they fell silent, I said: 'I, my friends, now speak the scriptures as the Seventy interpreted them; for having spoken them to you previously just as you possess them, I was testing you to see how your opinion was already disposed.' For when I recited the scripture that says: 'Woe to them, because they devise a wicked plan against themselves,' saying, 'Let us remove the righteous one, because he is troublesome to us,' as the Seventy interpreted it, I assented; but you said, 'Let us bind the righteous one, because he is troublesome to us,' speaking exactly what you wished to say. You have done something else, and it does not seem to me that you have listened attentively to the words. But since the day is now about to end—for the sun is already in the west—I will cease after adding one thing to what has been said; yet this very thing was also spoken to me within what was said, and it seems right to me to elaborate on it again. (Isaiah 3:10-11)
