Justin Martyr, First Apology 13
People call us atheists, but we are not; we revere the Creator of this whole universe, who stands in no need of blood, libations, or incense. As we have been taught, we honor Him with the word of prayer and thanksgiving over whatever we are able to offer, praising Him because we have received this alone as the honor worthy of Him: not to burn up on fire the things that have come into being under Him for nourishment, but to offer them to ourselves and to those in need, and in gratitude to send up to Him, through the word, processions and hymns on behalf of creation itself, on behalf of all that brings prosperity — the kinds of produce and the changes of the seasons — and on behalf of being born again in incorruption through faith, as we make our requests to Him. Who, being in their right mind, would not confess this?
We have come to know Jesus Christ as the teacher of these things and the one born for this very purpose, the Christ crucified under Pontius Pilate, procurator in Judea in the time of Tiberius Caesar. We have learned that He is the Son of the truly existing God, and we hold Him in second place, and the prophetic Spirit in third rank, because we honor the Word; and we will demonstrate this. For it is here that our madness is laid bare in the eyes of our critics: they say we give second place after the unchangeable, ever‑existing God and Father of all things to a man who was crucified, and they say this in ignorance of the mystery contained in it. To that mystery we urge you to give attention as we explain it.
