Ignatius — Epistle to the Smyrnaeans 8
Every one of you, follow the bishop, as Jesus Christ follows the Father. Follow the presbytery as you would the apostles. Honor the deacons as you would God's own command. Let no one do anything that belongs to the church without the bishop. Let that Eucharist be held valid which is under the bishop, or under someone he has entrusted with it.
Where the bishop appears, there let the people be, just as where Jesus Christ is, there is the catholic church. Without the bishop it is not permitted either to baptize or to hold the love feast. But whatever he approves is pleasing to God as well, so that everything you do may be sure and valid.
