Ignatius of Antioch, Epistle to the Philadelphians 5

Ignatius of Antioch · d. c. 110 AD

My brothers, I am poured out exceedingly in my love for you, and in overflowing joy I safeguard you. Not I, though, but Jesus Christ. Bound in him, I fear the more, as one still incomplete. But your prayer to God will complete me, so that I may attain the lot in which I was shown mercy, having fled for refuge to the gospel as to the flesh of Jesus, and to the apostles as to the church's presbytery.

And let us love the prophets as well, because they too made their proclamation with the gospel in view, hoped in him, and waited for him. Believing in him they were saved, standing in the unity of Jesus Christ: saints worthy of love and of wonder, attested by Jesus Christ, and numbered together in the gospel of our common hope.
