Ignatius — Epistle to the Magnesians 7

Ignatius of Antioch · Epistle to the Magnesians · c. 110

The Lord was one with the Father and did nothing without him (John 5:19): nothing on his own, nothing through the apostles. In the same way, you must do nothing without the bishop and the presbyters. Do not try to make some private course look reasonable to yourselves. Come together in one place: one prayer, one plea, one mind, one hope, in love, in spotless joy. That joy is Jesus Christ, and nothing is better than he.

Run together, all of you, as to one temple of God, as to one altar, to one Jesus Christ. He came forth from one Father; he is with that One; and to that One he has returned.
