Commodian, Instructions 36

Commodian · fl. c. 250 AD

What? Half a Jew, you want to be half profane? From there you will not escape Christ’s judgment when dead. Yourself blind you wander and foolishly go in among the blind; therefore a blind man leads a blind man into the ditch. You go where you do not know, and unaware you leave from there. Learners go to the learned so they may leave learned, but you go to others from whom you can learn nothing. You go out before the doors, and thence also you go to the idols. Ask first what is commanded in the law; let them tell you if it is ordered to adore the gods. For it is ignored because of that for which we chiefly exist; but since they are guilty from the crime itself, they tell nothing of God’s precepts except marvels. Then still, blind, they lead you with them into the ditch. There are funerals; too much to report of them all — or, because I am shut in, I would work cramped among ploughs. The Almighty refused that they understand the King; from so great a crime He Himself fled those bloody men. He handed Himself to us by a superadded new law; thence now they bark with us, deserted by the King. But if you think there is hope in them — ******

36 QUI IUDAEI DIANT FANATIC. ? Tunc tamen in fossam secum uos caeci deducunt. Noluit Omnipotens illos intellegere Regem; A scelere a tanto refugit ipse cruentos. Tradidit se nobis <noua> superaddita lege, Inde modo latrant nobiscum re<ge> deserti.
