Commodian — Instructiones 17
We have already said much of unspeakable superstition, and still we pursue it lest we be said to have skipped something. Ammudas, whom his worshipers used to cultivate in their fashion — he was great for them when there was gold in the temple. They put their heads under the divinity as if present. It came to the summit that Caesar took the gold: the divinity fails or flees or passes into fire. The author of this crime stands clear — he who was shaping the same. He seduced so many and great men, falsely prophesying, and now he has fallen silent who used to be divine. For a voice used to burst out as if with altered mind, as though a god of wood spoke into his ear. Say now yourselves if the divinities are not false. From that prodigy which he lost, that prophet forgot to prophesy who before used to. Those monsters are feigned for a god by the devourers of wine, whose damnable boldness fashions divinities. For they were carried about, and another such little image: now he himself is silent, nor does anyone prophesy of him. O too much fools — but you want to destroy yourselves.
Latin
Ammudatem qui suum cultores more colebant, Magnus erat illis, quando fuit aurum in aedem. Mittebant capita sub numine quasi praesenti.
