Hercules because he crushed the monster of the Aventine mount — he who used to steal Evander’s herds. A strong cattle-thief is praised as god. Strength and theft do not confer divinity.

14 HERCLES. Hercules quod monstrum Auentini montis elisit Euandri qui solitus erat armenta furare, Rustica mens hominum, indocilis quoque, pro laude Cum gratias agere uellent, absentis Tonantis Laetandas aras in memoriam sibi fecerunt. Ex eo porrexit, de uetusto more colatur. Sed deus hic non est, licet fuit fortis in armis.
