Commodian — Instructiones 13

Commodian · Instructiones · c. 250

Whence has Silvanus appeared to be a god again? Perhaps he pleases because the pipe sings well. If a sweet fistula makes gods, every shepherd is divine. Rustic song is not a numen — leave the wood-god tale.

Latin

13 SILVANUS. Siluanus unde deus iterum apparuit esse? Inde forte placet, eo quod bene fistula cantat? Lar igitur quando? lignum nam forte non esset. Uenalem emisti dominum, cum tu ipse sis illi. Aspice, deficit lignum! quid illi debetur? Non te pudet, stulte, tales adorare tabellas? Unum quaere Deum, qui post mortem uiuere dicit! Secede ab istis, qui sunt biothanati facti.
