Clement of Alexandria — Stromata (on 1 Cor 12)

Clement of Alexandria · Stromata · c. 200

Again: “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit a word of wisdom, to another a word of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith in the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings in the same Spirit, to another workings of powers, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another kinds of tongues, to another interpretation of tongues; but all these the one and the same Spirit works, distributing to each individually as he wills.”

Things being so, the prophets are perfect in prophecy, the righteous in righteousness, and the martyrs in confession, and others in proclamation — not without share in the common virtues, yet succeeding in what they were appointed to.
