Clement of Alexandria, Miscellanies 2
Before I undertake the proposed task, I must, in the form of a preface, supply what was left unfinished at the end of the fifth Stromata. For since I have demonstrated that the symbolic mode is ancient and was employed not only by our prophets but also by most of the ancient Greeks and by no few of the other barbarian nations, it was also necessary to examine the mysteries of the initiations; I shall defer that explanation until we come to the things the Greeks have said about first principles, for I will show that they hold both this theory and the mysteries. After demonstrating how the Greek mind's insight was illuminated by the truth given to us through the Scriptures, and after indicating that they received the stolen truth from us—if one may say so without offense—I have proved the point. Bring forward the Greeks themselves as witnesses against themselves: for they so openly steal from one another that they confirm they are thieves, yet even unwillingly they secretly demonstrate our truth to their own countrymen. They will not even refrain from stealing what belongs to their own, let alone what belongs to us. I will say nothing about philosophical dogmas, since the very men who propagate the sects admit in writing that they received the most important of their doctrines from Socrates, lest they be proved ungrateful. Using the testimonies of a few men esteemed among the Greeks, I will examine their thieving character, disregarding chronological order, and then proceed to what follows. Orpheus, then, in his poetry, says: 'So nothing was more dog‑like and cold than another woman'; Homer states openly:
