Salvation in Christ

Arnobius, Against the Nations 2.2

Arnobius · fl. c. 300 AD

2.1. “And has he not held out the light of life to all and removed the danger of ignorance?” 2. - Who, if he were not worthy for you to listen to and believe, still for this very reason ought not to have been scorned by you: that he was showing you saving things, that he was wishing for you ways to heaven and vows of immortality. 3. “But he is worthy of hate, because he drove religions from the world, because he forbade approaching the worship of the gods.”

4. - Is he then accused as the extinguisher of religion and the author of impiety, who brought true religion into the world, who opened the doors of piety to humans blind and truly living in impiety and showed them to whom they should submit themselves? 5. Or is any religion truer, more dutiful, more powerful, more just, than to know the chief God, to know how to entreat the chief God, who alone is head and fountain of all goods, father, founder, and establisher of everlasting things, by whom all earthly and all heavenly things are animated and watered with vital motion, and who, if he were not, there would surely be nothing that would bear any name and substance?

4. - Ergone ille religionis extinctor et impietatis auctor arguitur, qui veram in orbe religionem induxit, qui hominibus caecis et revera in impietate degentibus pietatis aperuit ianuas et cúi se summitterent indicavit? 5.
